It all began one day early in 1988 at Mr Planet Retro’s family-owned engineering company. His dad Big Trev had started buying the odd Matchbox car release for that year and displaying them on the tearoom table — and before long, it became a thing.
Staff soon joined in, along with Mr PR, snapping up Matchbox cars wherever they could and adding them to the growing display. Proudly, there were only two double-ups. One vehicle, however, was missed from the original set — causing no small amount of distress to Mr PR’s OCD at the time. Ironically, it was probably the most Planet Retro car of all that slipped through the net — the #57 TV Van from the Sci-Fi set.
Matchbox cars hold a special place in die-cast history. Produced in compact scale and originally packaged to fit inside a matchbox-sized box, these models became known for their realism, durability, and wide range of everyday vehicles, commercial vans, and performance cars. Over time, unopened examples have become increasingly difficult to source, particularly those that have survived decades of storage without being opened or played with.
This curated 1998 collection brings together vintage Matchbox cars selected for their condition, originality, and collector appeal. Each model has been chosen deliberately rather than assembled as a bulk lot, with a focus on brand new, unopened examples that remain sealed in their original packaging. Minor age-related wear to packaging is expected and consistent with long-term storage, but the integrity of the sealed contents has been preserved.
About This Collection
This collection includes approximately 73 vintage Matchbox cars, released across multiple eras and series. To ensure accuracy, quality control, and proper documentation, models are being listed in stages rather than all at once. A selection is available now, with additional cars added progressively.
Individual cars are listed separately and priced based on their specific model, condition, packaging, and collector demand.
Condition Standards
All cars within this curated collection meet the following standards:
- Brand new and unopened
- Sealed in original Matchbox packaging
- Packaging may show light age-related wear consistent with storage
- Contents untouched (just oohed and aahed over), and preserved for display or long-term collectability
